Among the solutions are Koni FSD (Frequency Selective Damping) shock absorbers. "Koni FSD shock absorbers enhance both roadholding and passenger comfort. Unlike other sports shock absorbers that offer better roadholding but less comfort, there are no compromises with Koni FSD shock absorbers," said KL Auto owner Desmond Chong.
The FSD technology allows for a "smart" suspension system that adjusts automatically to road conditions as well as driving style. The basic principle behind FSD technology is simple. No electronics or sensors are used. The FSD technology is based purely on hydraulics, and actively controls the damping level on the basis of the movement frequency of both the car's body and suspension. It is touted as reacting even more responsively compared with electronic systems. The benefits of FSD technology include improved road grip and safety levels, superior body control, and extra comfort for vehicles with low profile tyres. Other advantages include ending the compromise between comfort and handling, ease of integration in conventional damper layouts, cost efficiency and doing away with the need for sensors, cables or other electronic devices. In Malaysia, Koni FSD shock absorbers are available for Japanese and Korean cars such as the Toyota Altis and Honda Civic as well as most European marques. Koni FSD shock absorbers are priced from RM3,000 onwards per set.
Another solution from KL Auto is Autofoam, which offers improved vehicle handling and reduced NVH (noise, vibration and harshness). A German product, Autofoam is injected into the hollow recesses (frame, sills and pillars) of the car body and chassis. Autofoam employs a two-part catalytic-curing formula that expands and hardens into a semi-rigid structure. Chong said Autofoam is an ultra-lightweight and safe solution to improve passenger comfort levels and reduce body roll in a vehicle. "Autofoam, which can last for the lifespan of a car, is both fire retardant and non-hydroscopic as it does not absorb moisture or shrink over time. It is strong and also absorbs energy during impact. In vehicle accidents where repairs to the chassis are needed, Autofoam can be removed with minimum fuss," said Chong, who is a renowned NVH specialist in the Klang Valley. Chong has treated thousands of cars, including Aston Martin DB7 units, with Autofoam since 1999. After Autofoam chassis treatment, Chong said the vehicle weight would increase by between two and 4.5kg. "It depends on the size of the vehicle," he said. Chong added that the Autofoam treatment process, which takes between two and six hours, does not require any drilling or cutting of the car body. "We do not treat panels like doors or fenders. We only remove the plastic side-sill plates, A & B pillar trimmings and the rear seats if needed," said Chong. "Autofoam takes only seven minutes to harden. That is why during the treatment process, our technician must be completely focused. Also, it is crucial that only trained and skilled technicians are assigned." After the treatment process, Autofoam will take about three days for full curing. As an NVH specialist, Chong also provides packages that combine Autofoam with noise and vibration damping mattes from brands such as Wurth and Insumat. Autofoam treatment packages start from as low as RM480 for mini compacts like the Perodua Kelisa and Kancil. "The combination of Koni FSD shock absorbers, Autofoam treatment and our soundproofing solutions will definitely maximise your driving pleasure," said Chong. Chong offers a five-year warranty on Autofoam and vehicle soundproofing packages. KL Auto is located at 66, Jalan Dato Haji Eusoff, Kompleks Damai, off Jalan Ipoh, Kuala Lumpur.
